The poisoning happened in Vang Vieng, a tourist hotspot in Laos known for its nightlife. Alongside Holly and Bianca, the victims included a British woman, two Danish women, and an American man. Over a dozen others fell seriously ill after consuming the toxic drinks.

Methanol, a dangerous chemical sometimes added to alcoholic drinks illegally, is highly toxic. Even a small amount can be deadly, as it damages vital organs once consumed.

Hostel Owner Detained

The two teenagers were staying at the Nana Backpacker Hostel, whose owner has been detained by Laotian police for questioning. The hostel has denied that the tainted drinks came from its bar. Investigations are ongoing as  of the methanol poisoning.

Holly and Bianca’s deaths have devastated their Melbourne communities. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences, saying,
“This trip should have been full of joy. It’s beyond sad that it ended in such a tragedy. All Australians are thinking of Holly, Bianca, and their families.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong added that the government would continue supporting the families and working with Laotian officials to uncover the truth.
