Sydney Residents Targeted by Scammers Posing as Local Police

New Scam Targets Sydney Residents: Fake Calls from Police Station

Sydney residents targeted by scammers a new phone involving callers pretending to be from a local police station. These scammers attempt to gather personal information by convincing their victims that they have been identified as victims of a scam or online fraud.

Multiple reports have been made to police by community members who have received these fraudulent calls and voice messages. The callers claim to be from The Rocks Police Station and request personal details from the recipients.

Officers from the Sydney City Police Area Command are currently investigating the origin of these calls. Police are urging the public to take precautions to reduce the risk of falling victim to such scams. They advise hanging up immediately if the caller makes any threats.

A police spokesperson emphasized not to disclose personal information or provide bank details to anyone who calls. They also advised against sharing PINs or account passwords and making any payments via phone, internet, or cash to the caller.

“If you are suspicious about the credentials of a caller, ask questions. If they avoid answering or refuse to provide information, hang up,” the spokesperson said.

“Scammers use detailed scripts to convince you they are legitimate and create high-pressure situations to force immediate decisions. Don’t let them pressure you.”
