Celebrity Richard Glover Says Goodbye to ABC Radio Sydney

Richard Glover Says Goodbye to ABC Radio Sydney

After 26 years as the voice of Drive on ABC Radio Sydney, Richard Glover has signed off for the last time. Known for his warm humor and engaging conversations, Glover’s farewell was filled with emotion, gratitude, and memories of an exceptional career.

Reflecting on an Incredible Journey

Richard Glover described his time hosting Drive as “one of the best jobs in journalism.” Over the years, he connected with thousands of listeners, sharing stories that ranged from lighthearted fun to deeply moving moments.

For Glover, the audience’s willingness to engage with all aspects of life—both joyful and serious—made his job truly special.

A Beloved Segment: Thank God It’s Friday (TGIF)

Glover’s popular segment, Thank God It’s Friday (TGIF), has been a Friday evening favorite since 1998. Designed to mark the end of the workweek, the show blended comedy, music, and discussion of current events.

Inspired by old-fashioned variety shows, TGIF brought in comedians like Tommy Dean and Gretel Colleen to add humor and insight.

Since 2008, live audiences have joined the fun at ABC’s Ultimo studios, creating a unique atmosphere of laughter and connection. Glover called the segment a way to “match the moment” when people relax after a long week.

Plans for the Future

While stepping away from Drive, Glover isn’t leaving the public eye. He will continue writing his weekly column in The Sydney Morning Herald and plans to spend more time with his grandchildren. Chris Bath, a former TV presenter, will take over as the new host of Drive in January.

A Farewell Full of Tributes

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Glover’s final broadcast to thank him for his contributions to journalism. Fellow ABC presenter James Valentine also praised Glover for his storytelling and ability to connect with people during moments of both happiness and hardship.

TGIF Will Continue

The legacy of Thank God It’s Friday will carry on with Charlie Pickering as the new host. The show will now air on Radio Sydney, Radio Melbourne, and Radio National, reaching even more listeners in 2025.

Saying Goodbye to Loyal Listeners

In his farewell speech, Glover expressed his gratitude to the listeners who shared their stories and emotions with him over the years. “Life is a rich mix of terrible and wonderful things,” he said. “Our audience knows how to talk about it all.”

Richard Glover leaves behind a remarkable legacy, and his listeners will surely miss his voice on Drive.
