New Light Rail System in Western Sydney Nears Completion

Final Testing Phase Underway for Parramatta Light Rail

A report released last year highlighted the significant issues within Western Sydney’s transport system, sparking much-needed attention and action. In response, the NSW government announced a substantial $1.9 billion investment aimed at revamping the region’s transport infrastructure. This investment includes enhancements to bus services and the introduction of a new Metro system. Notably, a significant portion of this funding is allocated to the development of a new Light Rail system through the heart of Parramatta.

Last week, the Parramatta Light Rail project hit a significant milestone: all vehicles and 16 stops were successfully tested and deemed operational. The project now advances to its final testing phase, with Transport for NSW suggesting an opening date will be announced in the coming months.

Progress and Testing

Testing of the 12-kilometre track, connecting Westmead to Carlingford via the Parramatta CBD and Camellia, began in December 2023. On July 8, the project entered the ‘trial running’ phase. This phase includes running the 45-metre-long vehicles in both directions between Westmead and Carlingford and conducting various interactive drills to simulate potential incidents and develop recovery plans. The timetable for the Light Rail system will be finalized over the next few months.

Once operational, the new line is expected to create 150 jobs in Western Sydney, with trams running every 7.5 minutes during peak times.

Integrating into Sydney’s Light Rail Network

Now officially designated as the L4, this new Light Rail line will join Sydney’s existing network, which includes the L1 Dulwich Hill Line, L2 Randwick Line, and L3 Kingsford Line. This addition aligns with the government’s objective to create a better-connected and more affordable city, including a focus on developing affordable housing along the line.

Rezoning for Parramatta’s Church Street North precinct has been approved, paving the way for up to 1,800 new homes. Minister for Transport Jo Haylen emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “From 2032, Westmead will be the station that has it all – connecting the T1 to the new L4 and the future Metro West.”

Future Developments

Sydney Metro West is scheduled to open in 2032, further enhancing Parramatta’s connectivity. Additionally, applications for businesses to operate 24 hours a day are now open, promising increased activity and vibrancy in the area.

NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed optimism about the project, stating,

“The people of Western Sydney deserve this kind of public transport – and these final tests mean it’s looking like all systems go for the L4 in the coming months.”

Safety First

As the Light Rail enters its final testing stages, residents and visitors are reminded to exercise caution around the tracks. Trams will be operational, but boarding will not be permitted until the official opening. Be sure to stop, listen, and look around when near the tracks to ensure safety.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development, which promises to significantly improve transport links and connectivity in Western Sydney.
