Three bus passengers have died, and four others are in a critical condition after a terrible crash involving a bus and a caravan on a major Queensland highway.
Authorities said the Greyhound coach, carrying 33 passengers, collided with a four-wheel drive towing a caravan near the Wilson Creek Rest Area on the Bruce Highway, south of Townsville. Pictures from the scene show a red bus stopped near train tracks with the caravan stuck in its front, highlighting the serious nature of the high-speed crash on one of the state’s busiest roads.
Emergency Response
Emergency services responded quickly to reports of the collision. Superintendent Graeme Paine from Queensland Police confirmed that the three victims were women, though their ages have yet to be confirmed. Queensland Ambulance Service reported that four people were taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Statement from Greyhound Australia
Greyhound Australia’s CEO, Dan Smith, expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“We are heartbroken that three passengers on Greyhound Australia service GX402, travelling from Brisbane to Townsville, have died after a motor vehicle accident at Gumlu in North Queensland today,” he said.
He also noted that several other passengers were seriously injured and are receiving medical treatment.
“This is a tragic incident, and our deepest sympathies go out to those involved and their families and friends.”
Medical Assistance
Many people were treated at the scene, with several taken to Ayr and Townsville Hospitals. One person was airlifted to Townsville Hospital. Following the incident, Townsville Hospital and Health Service advised residents to reconsider non-urgent visits to these hospitals as all staff have been called in to manage the high number of patients.
Community and First Responder Efforts
“A crash like this is very, very confronting,” said Superintendent Paine. “The first responders and community members at the scene have done an exceptional job in assisting the injured and securing the site.”
Investigation and Road Closure
Investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
“We have not yet determined any factors that contributed to the crash at this stage,” Paine remarked. “However, an incident of this size involving so many people is undoubtedly significant and tragic.”
The Bruce Highway remains closed in both directions, causing substantial delays. Motorists are advised to avoid the area, as the crash has also affected the rail line.
