Glover’s popular segment, Thank God It’s Friday (TGIF), has been a Friday evening favorite since 1998. Designed to mark the end of the workweek, the show blended comedy, music, and discussion of current events.
Inspired by old-fashioned variety shows, TGIF brought in comedians like Tommy Dean and Gretel Colleen to add humor and insight.
Since 2008, live audiences have joined the fun at ABC’s Ultimo studios, creating a unique atmosphere of laughter and connection. Glover called the segment a way to “match the moment” when people relax after a long week.
Plans for the Future
While stepping away from Drive, Glover isn’t leaving the public eye. He will continue writing his weekly column in The Sydney Morning Herald and plans to spend more time with his grandchildren. Chris Bath, a former TV presenter, will take over as the new host of Drive in January.
A Farewell Full of Tributes
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese joined Glover’s final broadcast to thank him for his contributions to journalism. Fellow ABC presenter James Valentine also praised Glover for his storytelling and ability to connect with people during moments of both happiness and hardship.

The legacy of Thank God It’s Friday will carry on with Charlie Pickering as the new host. The show will now air on Radio Sydney, Radio Melbourne, and Radio National, reaching even more listeners in 2025.
