The American team currently leads with a total score of 172.296, followed by Italy with 166.861, and the People’s Republic of China close behind at 166.628. Reigning world silver medallists Brazil and 2022 world all-around champion Rebeca Andrade are yet to compete in the day’s final group.

In the all-around competition, Simone Biles, the 2016 gold medallist, scored an impressive 59.566, placing her ahead of reigning champion Suni Lee (56.132) and Jordan Chiles (56.065). However, due to the two-per-country rule, Chiles will not advance to the all-around final scheduled for Thursday, 1 August.

Biles, 27, entered the Bercy Arena to thunderous applause, appearing relaxed and confident. Her balance beam performance was particularly noteworthy, featuring a near-perfect routine that included a two layout stepout series and a full-twisting double back dismount, earning her a score of 14.733.

However, Biles’ return was not without its challenges. During the floor exercise warm-up, she appeared to tweak her left ankle while performing her signature move, the Biles I (double layout half out). Despite the heavily taped ankle, she delivered a solid routine, scoring 14.666.

Concerned fans watched as Biles continued to show signs of discomfort during the vault warm-up. Yet, when it was time for her competitive routine, she executed a flawless Yurchenko double pike, earning a massive 15.800. Her coach, Cecile Landi, assured reporters that Biles was not considering withdrawing from the competition, stating, “She felt a little something in her calf. That’s all. Never in her mind [to leave].”

The minor injury, which had surfaced a few weeks prior but had subsided during training, seemed to improve as the competition progressed. Biles closed her day with a strong performance on the uneven bars, scoring 14.433, and ending with a beaming smile as she embraced her coach and acknowledged the cheering crowd.

The audience’s reaction was a testament to Biles’ incredible journey and triumphant return to the sport she dominates. As she blew kisses and waved to her fans, it was clear that her presence in the Paris 2024 Olympics is nothing short of extraordinary.

Simone Biles performance not only highlights her resilience and skill but also sets a promising tone for the upcoming competitions. With her spectacular return, Biles has once again proven why she is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
