Authorities have confirmed that lives and homes are under direct threat as the fire continues to spread. The blaze, which started around 12:45 pm on Sunday, remains uncontained and uncontrolled.
Fire Crews Battling the Blaze
Thick smoke is billowing across the region, with multiple fire crews and aerial support working tirelessly to contain the fire.
According to Matt Muir, Incident Controller from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES), the fire has jumped across Cape Naturaliste Drive into a reserve near Marri Drive and Hansen Street, placing numerous properties at risk.
“We currently have numerous properties under threat, and the fire isn’t contained or controlled at the moment,” Mr. Muir stated.
Firefighters from the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS), local bushfire brigades, and DFES personnel are working alongside four air attack aircraft, which are assisting ground crews.
Fire Direction and Challenges
The fire is spreading eastward towards Dunsborough town due to light south-westerly winds. One of the biggest challenges for firefighters is the dense vegetation surrounding homes, making containment efforts more difficult.
Mr. Muir also advised that while residents inside the warning area should evacuate, those in the Meelup and Eagle Bay regions should remain in place for now.
“We stress that for residents in the Meelup and Eagle Bay area, please stay put at this stage as Cape Naturaliste Road and Naturaliste Terrace are currently blocked off due to emergency services operating in the area.”
Evacuation Centre Open
For those needing shelter, an evacuation centre has been established at the Dunsborough Recreation Centre.
