Sydney most “Instagrammable” flower event the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival, is back at the Auburn Botanic Gardens from Saturday, August 17, to Sunday, August 25. This vibrant celebration of Japanese culture and the breathtaking beauty of cherry blossoms, or ‘Sakura,’ is set to draw thousands of visitors eager to witness this rare spectacle.

For just two weeks each year, the Auburn Botanic Gardens transform into a slice of Japan, with over 150 cherry blossom trees in full bloom. Cumberland Council Mayor Lisa Lake emphasized the significance of this event as a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in Japanese culture, traditions, and cuisine amidst the stunning natural backdrop of the gardens.

This year’s festival promises more than just beautiful blossoms. In honor of Hello Kitty’s 50th birthday, visitors can enjoy special performances and meet-and-greet sessions with the beloved character every day. Entertainment highlights include the return of George & Noriko, known for their dynamic blend of blues and traditional Japanese music, as well as cultural performances featuring Japanese Taiko drums, live music, and even belly dancing by Helwa Bellydance.

Visitors can also participate in Origami workshops, laser tag, Ikebana demonstrations (Japanese flower arranging), and Hello Kitty-themed craft activities. Bonsai enthusiasts will appreciate the horticultural talks and demonstrations, while art lovers can explore Manga workshops.

The festival’s Japanese Food Village will tantalize your taste buds with cherry blossom-themed dishes and an array of Japanese fusion foods, including ramen, Japanese barbecue, and delectable desserts like Japanese cheesecakes and cookies. To top it off, the Cherry Blossom Bar will offer a selection of Japanese-inspired drinks, including Asahi beer, Sake, and refreshing cocktails.

For those seeking the perfect photo opportunity, the Cherry Arbour and the iconic Mt Fuji Torii Gate in the Japanese Gardens provide the ideal backdrop for your “cherry snap.” Don’t forget to snap a picture with Hello Kitty herself!
